HTC RUMORED TO GO CAMERA CRAZY AND LAUNCH TWO “EYE” PHONES IN OCTOBER

If you’re wondering what HTC has planned for its October 8 event, rumors are gathering about two camera-related smartphones, both of which could be revealed on the day. Considering the invitation uses the tagline “Double exposure,” this does make some sense. If the gossip is accurate, then we should look out for a modified version of the One M8, and a new phone codename the HTC Eye.
HTC has already made several spin-off versions of the One M8, and the device it may launch on October 8 could be related to one we’ve already seen: The HTC Butterfly 2. Announced in mid-August, the Butterfly 2 is destined for release only in Asia, but could form the basis of HTC’s new international phone. Confusingly, the device is being referred to as the One M8 Eye, and is said to use a 13-megapixel rear camera in place of the UltraPixel camera fitted to the existing One M8.
While the Butterfly 2 has a plastic body, the One M8 Eye could have a metal shell, which may mean the Butterfly 2’s other desirable feature – IP57 water resistance – won’t carry over. Without this, the One M8 Eye will be the standard One M8 with a higher megapixel camera. Interesting (particularly because it could be viewed as an admission the UltraPixel setup isn’t working for buyers), but hardly exciting.
The second phone which could be announced on October 8 is the HTC Eye, note that’s Eye without the M8 bit, indicating it’s another device entirely. Details were recently shared via the @upleaks Twitter account, where a 5.2-inch, 1080p screen and a Snapdragon 801 processor were linked with the phone. Apparently, the Eye will be an “ultimate selfie phone,” and could therefore match the Desire 820’s specs with an 8-megapixel front camera, and all-new photo apps.
HTC’s October 8 event will take place in New York, and we’ll bring you all the details about the new smartphones, along with any other surprises, on the day.
